About Us

For over 42 years the Commercial Law Association of Australia (CLA) has been a 'quiet achiever' serving the interests of practitioners in both commerce and law.

Since its establishment in 1965 the CLA has continued to provide networking and educational opportunities for those involved in legal and business sectors. The Association is recognised as a leader in the provision of quality continuing legal education including seminars, workshops and conferences.

The CLA's mission is to encourage and develop knowledge and understanding of law usages and practices in Australia and overseas. The Association plays an important role in providing information and encouraging debate on important issues.

Key focus areas for the Association include:

Professional development - continuing legal education

The CLA's Leading Edge Seminar Series, the International Seminar Series and one and halfday conferences promote a comprehensive range of commercial law topics featuring leading practitioners as speakers. Seminars are usually held at the NSW Library, with other venues used for some special co-sponsored events.

Education - member information

The Commercial Law Quarterly has been continually published for over 20 years and is recognised as a major reference source within the legal profession. In recent times the CLA has upgraded its information services provided through its website. Increasingly the website will be used to develop more interaction with the membership base and increase the range of materials available to members.

Encouraging young professionals - New Graduates and Mentoring Program

Young lawyers are looking for more than just extra salary enhancements. Job satisfaction, career development and work life balance are also very important issues for recent graduates. Consequently the CLA launched its mentoring program during 2005.

Legislation and advocacy

The Legislative Review Task Force regularly reviews legislation and legislative reform proposals that fall within the Association's areas of interest. The Task Force undertakes reviews in relation to a number of commercial topics. These reviews have produced a varied level of response from 'watchin' briefs to participation in collaborative workshops and Parliamentary inquiries. All members of the CLA are encouraged to join the Task Force.
